I think the culprit was the sponge filter. I just hadn't thought to give it a solid rinsing, even with water changes, and I had it bubbling out water--and thus odor--above the water level.

I spent a long while rinsing it under hot water. If it still gives me an issue, I'll simply buy a new one.

Oh when the good bactiera dies off in a wet filter the smell is so bad like a dead animals in swamp water.

I had a canister filter I left full of water but shut it off for weeks. The room started to smell. When I open the filter OMG I thought I would die.

Glad you found the stink. I need to rinse my spong out tonight .

Are you dumping old bbs down the sink? I would dump a little bleach down the drain to help if some smell is coming from the drain too.

Snowflake, that's a great idea, because yes, I am dumping old BBS down the sink. It certainly can't hurt to put some bleach down too!
