what does this mean?

Some bettas,such as halfmoons(not sure what other ones do it) Can and will basically destroy their own tail. Sometimes never growing back. Crowntails dont do that. But I havent had luck keeping CTS alive.

Veiltails also do it (Synthisis is currently having this problem). After months of having the issue Neptune's tail is almost grown back :)

thank you,crowntails seem to be all I see here and i do like them, is there a high mortality rate with bettas or is it more a case of people not researching their requirements before they buy, I am going on holiday in 3 weeks and am putting off geting mine untill I get back so I can keep an eye on him rather than leave my son in charge, i would be gutted if anything happens to my fish once I pick him out

I love crowntails - I love all bettas, but crowntails are my favorite tail type :)

Um I think a lot of the problem is some people don't know what to look for in a healthy betta vs a sick betta. Sometimes you can pick one that looks and acts healthy, but it can have internal problems.

It basicly when the fish opens its tail to the point it just rips. The fish in my avatar blew his tail about a month after the photo was taken.

It usually happens when flaring because the fish opens it's fins too wide and that's when they rip.

so if I don't encourage flaring if possible, it shouldnt happen?if it does, is it something that needs medicating or provided the water is spot on with a little stress coat,does it resolve itself? Im researching all i can regarding a healthy Betta, but as said sometimes you cant tell

Your betta is going to flair regardless of whether you want him to or not. If he does blow his tail I recommend salt baths to help it.

I think it happens more to bettas with heavy finnage.
