Popeye? (viewer discretion advised, disturbing images)

Pulled this fish off the shelf at walmart, he has a huge problem with his eye. Is this a sever case of popeye or something else entirely? The employee told me that he came in like that and has been getting worse for about a week.

Poor guy....

I would treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic, such as:
- Seachem Kanaplex (kanamycin)
- API Triple Sulfa or Mardel Maracyn Plus (must be plus)
- Tetracycline (although many organisms are now resistant to it.)

If you can't get one of those, then a combination of two antibiotics may help, such as:
- Mardel Maracyn (erithromycin) and any ONE of these: Mardel Maracyn 2 (minocycline) OR API Furan 2 OR Bifuran OR Jungle Fungus Clear.

I have triple sulfa on hand. How should I go about water changes? On the box it says one packet of powder treats 10 gallons, but all I have for him is a one gallon tank. It also says to make 25% water changes, but I don't think I can dose low enough with the changes without overdosing and potentially killing him :(

It's OK. You can dose for a 1 gal tank....

DAY 1:
1) If you have a filter, remove the carbon or cartridge from your filter, but continue aeration. (If you don't have a filter, skip this step.)

2) Fill a 1 gallon container with water that is the same temperature as his tank.
3) Add water conditioner!
4) Stir in one packet of medication. Mix/shake until the medication is dissolved.

5) Pour 13 ounces of the medicated solution into a measuring cup. Add this to his tank.

DAY 2:
6) Tomorrow, make up a new gallon of medicated water. Add 13 ounces to his tank again.

DAY 3:
7) After 24 hours, do a 25% to 50% water change.

DAY 3 (continued) and DAY 4:
8) Repeat the above 2 day treatment. (This will take you to a total of 4 doses.)

9) After completing the 2nd round, do another 25% - 50% water change.
10) If you use a filter, replace the carbon or filter.

This completes one "cycle" of treatment (4 doses).

If he's not better, you can repeat the entire treatment cycle. (Days 5-8. Will provide another 4 doses.)

Poor little guy. I hope he improves soon. He may end up blind in that eye, but they can make do just fine.

I'm actually pretty sure he'll lose the eye :( But oh well, he is otherwise healthy and I'm sure he'll make it through the treatment okay. I think I saw what might be parasites in his bowl before I changed the water out today. Would it be advisable to also add a tsp of epsom salt to clear his system?

Yes, you can do 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt into his 1 gal tank. It may help with the eye, too.

(I'd thought about suggesting Epsom salt before for his eye, then decided that getting the antibiotic in there was more important.)

What type of parasites did you see?
