The tiniest petco baby

Visited a town with a petco today (we only have petsmart) and came home with a baby betta. I know there is controversy surrounding the sale of babies, but I have several other bettas and am going to make sure this little one gets a good home.

He or she (I'm hoping for male so its he from here on out) is currently floating in one of my tanks to keep warm. I think I'm going to start a journal documenting his growth, if I do I will post the link here. Not sure what age he is, but he was the smallest one there, and is about 1 inch currently.

If you have any guess at age, gender, or tail type please let me know :)

Given how well colored-up he is, I suspect he's older than his size would indicate. It's really hard to tell with these pet store babies because they are often malnourished and kept in poor water conditions. I would guess he's around 6-7 weeks old. His size developmentally matches 6 weeks. And he looks like a male to me, but I can't be 100% certain at this point. Tail type is also uncertain at this stage but he looks like he could be a delta tail. His pectoral fins are going to be impressive.

I'm so excited about him! He's going to be a surprise! He has some iridescent blue that shows along his body under a flashlight, my guess is he will be red/blue multicolored. Miss Audrey was NOT thrilled about having a neighbor floating in her tank, but I will remedy that situation today.

More pics to come :)

I would say that although he looks like a normal breeders six week old, he is probably a bid older due to the fact high at he spent time in a cold, small cup with improper foods.

It will definitely be exciting to watch him grow up.

MattsBettas do you also think he is a boy?

Also, I have a very limited selection of fry appropriate foods, but I am feeding frozen daphnia currently. He doesn't seem interested in the micropellets I bought just yet. Is this sufficient until he starts eating pellets?

I have him in the cup he came in still, because he needs to float in a tank until he is big enough to live in a divided tank. I have been using the turkey baster to clean his water but I have been too scared to do a 100% change because I read that babies are much more sensitive to temperature/water parameters, etc.

Also I put some IAL in with him :)

Here is a picture from this afternoon
