I hope to get my first betta sometime soon. I think they are beautiful! I wondered, what size of tank would I need? I have a 21ltr tank, which I believe is 4.5 gallons, is this too small? I can get a bigger one if need be.
Also, what food do bettas eat? Do they eat a special betta food, or can they eat tropical fish food?
I like to have mine is 5 gal and up but 4 gallons is perfectly fine.
Bettas should have a staple diet of betta pellets or flakes. I have found most all fish to eat hikari betta bio-gold pellets and bettamin flakes. I now feed mostly the pellets just because it is much easier to feed the correct amount with less hassle. They can also eat frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, all of which I feed to my bettas. Just remember to thaw the frozen and rehydrate the freeze-dried. They shouldn't eat tropical fish food because it contains too much vegetable matter which can constipate them. Bettas are carnivores.

Thank you! Very helpful. Do you have a link to any of those foods? I'm not sure I want to feed bloodworms...is there anything else or do they need them?
Most people reccomend 2.5 gals and higher, so your Betta will be fine in a 4.5 gal tank.
As for food, you can just feed them pellets. But they will really appreciate bloodworms or brine shrimp as treats. If the smell bothers you, or you're squeamish, you can feed them freeze-dried foods. They don't smell, and if you don't want to touch it you can always give it to them with a clean pair of tweezers.

Ah thank you! I will have a go of the bloodworms, don't want my betta to miss out and my tank should be fine!
