All 3 of my tanks have sand and the way I clean it is stick the gravel vac sorta close to the sand and swirl it around in circles. Not to much though but just enough to kind of kick up enough for the vac to suck up some stuff. You do end up picking up some sand but to me it's no big deal as I can always add more if it gets really low (which hasn't happened haha)
