Angry Meijer kills more betta fish than sells!!!

I am disgusted by my local Meijer store, their betta stock is half dead or about to die, couple of dead bettas even started to decompose and fall apart, algae is growing from their dead bodies!! I spent 20 minutes waiting to talk to somebody who is in charge of fish department to no avail, I hate these mega stores that started selling betta fish right next to their produce department, corporate piece of crap burn in hades meijer CEO and his corporate commiette or whoever had a brilliant idea to sell bettas the store! Just stick to selling produce and furniture, don't start killing bettas that you can't even take care of, I am really pissed right now!!!!!!

Disgusting. I've seen Walmarts and PetSupermarkets with bettas in the same state- mostly dead and the few that aren't are halfway there.

we don't have stores like petco in the UK, but we have Pets At Home and they are also pretty bad for keeping fish and down to my own bad experience, no longer give them my money. Last time I was in they had 3 male bettas together with no dividers what so ever. Reported them to head office and nothing was done....

How sad. :( I am so glad that the only place that sells bettas in my town seems to take good care of them.

Meijers got me started keeping bettas as I made sympathy/rescues purchases knowing very little about them. They often don't really have dedicated people to take care of them. It's very discouraging. I've been able to get changes made to their care in their stores but not long lasting because of turnover. What state is the Meijer you go to in?

This store is in Michigan, I went there to buy some produce, then I saw some fishtanks right next to the frozen juices department (to make things even worse), and then I saw the poor bettas in miserable condition... I am here only temporary so I couldn't rescue any, one of them saw me and starting wiggling, dancing... asking me to save him, its so heartbreaking! I hate Meijer's now!

Go back and get the wiggly guy and a gallon critter keeper and a cooler (to help him stay warm and calm while you travel). I've seen others on the forum who have picked up fish while traveling. You won't feel better about Meijers but your will feel better that you helped one. I do really hate that they put the fish next to the frozen food dept. all the way in the back of the store. You barely notice the fish. I think I have about 5 Meijers fish. They've really brought me joy.

Here's a poem I wrote on this topic awhile ago.

"Betta Make a Difference Poem"

“A man was in the pet store shopping for food for his dog One day, while looking at the pet food he saw a person sorting through fish in cups. He grew curious. She was arching her arm holding them up studying them closely. As he came closer he saw that it was a young woman and she was not sorting but was reaching down to examine them and frowning.

"Young lady," he asked, "Why are you looking at those fish so sadly?
"There are so many of them, and I only have room for a few, and if I do not buy them many of them will die."

"But young lady, do you not realize that there are thousands of bettas? They are just fish no big deal. You cannot possibly make a difference."
The young woman listened politely, paused and then bent down, picked up another betta and put it in her basket. She passed him, saying, "It made a difference for that one."

She said "When I leave I am going to have a word with the manager about how they are treating these fish. I am going to ask him to keep up their on their water changes. If he doesn’t listen I will post photos of how he cares for the fish on the internet".

The old man looked at the young woman inquisitively and thought about what she had said.

Inspired, he joined her and he put two bettas in his cart and said he would say something to the

management too. Soon others heard the conversation and joined in. They took photos of the fish

with their cell phones and promise to post them online if they didn’t see any improvement. They

also took a betta of their own. The young lady helped them find nice aquariums and supplies to

keep their bettas healthy. However, not all the bettas were saved." They made a difference though.

When they all went through the checkout line and registered their dissatisfaction with how the

bettas were being treated. Unfortunately, there are so many pet stores and there will always be more

to replace to them; so we have to keep telling them to upgrade their treatment so all the bettas will

really see a better life.

@jadaBlu, that's a beautiful poem and it's exactly how I feel. As much as we want to, we can't save them all. But the ones we can save, it makes a world of difference for them. And even the ones we try to save and it's too late, at least they didn't die alone in a dirty cup.

@jadaBlu - unfortunately I am flying to another state, I am afraid that shipping him will do even more damage... but once I settle down at home, I will rescue couple of bettas from these horrible conditions..

Thank you Aquatail and reffik it good that you posted about the problem at Meijer you may be able put your photos on Meijers facebook page with location information and request they address the care of the fish in that store. I was hoping the poem would help you feel better.
