Anyone know what this is?

I got it at Petco...it was in a tub that identified it as male, but it is small, an inch or so, not particularly pretty, but pretty active. I guess I got it because it didn't have all of the flourishes and I felt sorry for it, like Charlie Brown and the Xmas tree. I'm gonna name it Sue, after the Johnny Cash song , "A Boy Named Sue" since it was sold as a male. Or maybe I should call it "Pat" like the old SNL sketches.

Anyway, is this really a betta, and could it possibly be just young, or is it not really a male?

It may be fugly, but he/she/it is all about exploring the new tank, mainly near the middle and top near the water.

Looks like a female to me. The best way to check is look for the "pearl" under the belly. This is her egg spot. If that is there, it is a female. If you don't see one, then it could be a plakat male.
The lines down the body indicate stress. These should fade after s/he gets used to it's home.

Looks like a female to me. I think she's cute. )
She's just stressed, but soon she'll show some colours once she gets used to the tank.

Thanks all! Also, when I woke up this morning, the thick horizontal lines were replaced by thin vertical lines. I didn't know these fished changed markings like that. Does this mean she is no longer stressed out?

Hehe...one minute she's freaked, the next day she's randy...go figure.

I only paid 2.79 for her....the half-moon males were over $10, but I just felt sorry for this one. No pretty colors, extravagant fins, I figured if I didn't take her home no one would.

I got her a castle to hide in and a cory today...hope she doesn't try mating with it.

I also hope that I didn't screw up too bad with the 1.5G Tetra. I will probably get a 2.5 in a couple weeks.
