How do i work this filter??

I got a free tank with all these accessories from my neighbor cuz they're moving out. All of the equipments are fairly new (~6 mo.)and she bought it from $100 all together. Im having trouble getting the filter to work. The filter itself has a tube that goes to the tank. Water is being pumped by a motor and the water travels from the water and up to the top and goes to the filter. But the water is not pumping even though the motor is on. Am i supposed to suck the water first to 'hot wire' the thing or the pump will do this all by itself? Maybe mine has a problem?? Thank you in advance

Try getting a cup and scooping the water into the filter box. It should start after doing this a few times. :)

filter box is separate from the pump itself. i'll try to get some pics

maybe the pump itself has a problem? there is no O-ring around the motor. so i guess its not sealed so the water can't be pumped. Thanks for trying though Doggyhog.

i finally got it working. submerge the whole thing and the motor worked its magic. thx
