How long?

Just curious, does anyone know how long can Bettas survive out of water? How about in the water without being able to gulp air on the surface?

Today when I came home from school I saw that Gloria was relaxing in a fold in the plastic i put over Felix's net to prevent him from jumping into the tank. The plastic was draped a little over his net so it was close to the top, but the plastic would have prevented her from being able to breathe. I quickly guided her back out and tucked the plastic inside his net instead. She didn't seemed upset or shocked so I guess she had just recently swam in there. That's why I'm curious about breathing, I was worried she might do it again while I'm not home. :/

I think the main concern when they are out of water is that they'll dry up.

My sisters betta she has like six years ago was knocked off her desk by our cat and it managed to stay alive for two minutes. That's when we noticed and quickly put it in a glass of water. Yeah I think it's just the drying out thing that kills them. And the obvious shock it gets.
