For doing 50% water changes I don't think you have to take him out, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always kept my fish in b/c they get too stressed if I just kept taking them out and putting them back in. When I do full water changes I clean everything (rocks, decorations and plants). I don't see why you can't keep a tank in your bedroom, I have all of my tanks in there.

I take my bettas out because I had a bad incident cleaning my uncle's tank. One of his goldfish got too close to the siphon and I injured him very badly. Poor guy didn't make it.

Gloria always wants to know what I'm up to, so I always remove them as a precaution...

And I keep all of mine in my bedroom, since it's the only place I'm allowed to.

most filters need a certain amount of water to function- the weight of the water helps the suction- you're meant to fill it all the way up to near the lip of the tank. if the water falls too far it might create uncomfortable currents for the fish. Also if the water is too low the filter will overwork and may be damaged. the waterfall feature helps mix air in with the water and relieves surface tension for good exchange so fish can breath.
there's no problem keeping the fish in the bedroom so long as you keep it nice and clean.

As for the bedroom when he gets his water change i get the bedroom cleaned while i wait.
