Divided tanks + companions?

I have 2 20 gallons, a 10, a 5 and 3 gallon tanks all cycled/cycling with Betta fish in them. Eventually, in a few months I would love to add some random fish to be companions for my Bettas.

Couple of questions:

My tanks are divided in sections (5 to 7 gallons each minimum, except the 3 gallon) does this eliminate the possibility of getting tank mates? Do I go off the tank/filtration totals or just the sectional spaces?

Is there a comprehensive list of companion options?

In a seven gallon, you could probably comfortably fit in a small school of something. Maybe neon tetras. Or something small like them.
In a five gal, mystery/Apple/Nerite snails also are good options.
Ghost/cherry/etc shrimp are common and fun.
African Dwarf Frogs are cool, but I've hardly had any luck with them.

If you make new dividers out of acrylic and put .25" holes in them, the tank mates can have the entire tank while the Bettas stay confined. That's what I did and am quite happy. The only thing I would do differently black dividers instead of white since I have black sand. But if I did that, the light for the plants wouldn't reflect as well. I have a filter in each section.

Here's the tank when I first set it up to give you an idea. It's a 20 long. It has Bettas, male Endlers and Dwarf Panda Guppies, Pygmy and Hasbrosus Cories, PFR, Yellow, Blue Velvet, Malawa and Amano shrimp, Dwarf Orange Cajun Crayfish and Thai Micro Crabs. Also Assassin and Nerite snails.

Gorgeous tank!

I make my own dividers, they are clear plexiglass with small holes I've drilled into them, I'll check and see what size! Too small for my Bettas but I can't see much else making it through haha.

I love them clear and my boys in that tank don't bother each other much, but would like to paint one or two black for my 10 gallon.

Good to know!

Thank you very much.

.25" hole will allow most Nano/Micro fish and shrimp the entire tank. It's fun to watch them go through the holes; sometime single file.
