Splitting vs. Mixing

In a few days I'll be setting up a 10 gallon tank for a betta, and I'm trying to decide if I want to use a mesh split and get two bettas, or stick with one, and stock it with some other species. Right now I'm leaning towards the latter, and if I did that, it would probably be a group of neon tetras, with a couple snails and red cherry shrimp. If I do decide to do that, I will, of course, make sure the tank cycles before I add anything else. Does this sound okay?

Your betta's probably going to eat the shrimp, mine were gone in a day and snails produce a lot of waste so watch how many you get

Personally, I would prefer not to divide. Dividers have their own troubles: risk of cross-contamination, jumping, possibility of aggression, look messy if not done well, reduced room to swim. I would go for one, with a species of small schooling fish.

HOWEVER: check your water hardness and pH first. It's very important to make sure that your fish are right for your water. If you have a high pH and hard water, neons are probably not right for you; male Endlers would be better. However, if you have soft, acidic water, neons would be great.
