Cycling a new tank

My friend has a pond in his backyard. If he gives me some of the water from the pond and a few guppies, would it be enough to cycle a tank? Or would I need the rock/gravel? Thanks!

Water has very little of the bacteria needed so you would need substrate and/or decor. Before getting the guppies you should read up on fishless cycling.
