10 Gallon questions

Wanted to get some opinions from you guys.
I'm going to be making a 10 gallon sorority tank. Should I get a setup with the filter and everything or should I mix and match. This will be the biggest tank I have. What kind of equipment would you all suggest? There will be 5-6 female bettas.

My Elite heater does its job quite well. It goes up to around 78 degrees.

Thanks.
More questions. Are heaters absolutely needed for a 10 gallon? None of my smaller tanks have them. My house is never below 70 degrees.
Also, could I put an algae eater in with my sorority? I just love them, I just don't know if it's safe?

I have the 10 gallon set up from Walmart and I have been pleased with everything that it came with except that it had an incadesent light which I replaced with a floresent one that they also carry for about $5.00 the same light at Petsmart was almost $15.00. As far as heaters I have the Hydro submersiable one in my large tank at home and it work really well and I have one of the Tetra ones in my 2.5 gallon that they have at Walmart that you do not have to adjust it keeps my tank at 76-78 so I am pleased with it so far but I have not had it very long. I can not remember what brand the others I have are because I have had them a while. In my opinion you will need a heater because Bettas like to be around 76-78 degrees. And with the size of your tank the only alge eater I knoe of that you could get is a Oto the others that I am familiar with get to big for 10 gallons. Good luck with your fish.

Hmm, I'm not sure. Since it's a larger body of water, I'd think it would be harder to heat by itself. Of course, I need a heater since it's too cold here...

As for algae eaters, what did you have in mind? You can keep Otos and Siamese Algae Eaters with them. I'm not sure if SAEs can fit in a 10 gal or not, though.
