I have 3 bettas, and they each have their own personality. I've had them all for about a month. They replaced 3 goldfish won in the state fair ping pong ball toss (after an additional 9 Petsmart goldfish, and 12 dead goldfish later, we changed to bettas!) One crowntail betta hangs out ALL the time in the same spot at the top of the tank, along the edge and in the corner. It lays so near the top that it frequently appears to be laying sideways to keep its top fin in the water. It just started blowing a bubble nest, and does not appear to be in any distress. So, experienced betta owners... I guess this is "normal" betta behavior?

I think so. One of my CT's will actually lay on the rocks at the bottom like a dog, it's so funny!

Do you have a test kit? Please post the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH results. If you don't have a test kit, I suggest investing in one particularly this. Avoid the test strips which are all too often misleading. I'd check your water parameters. The way you described it, I've never observed that in my experience. What do you feed your fish? Sounds like buoyancy issue to me.
