Hello and welcome to FishForum. What size is your tank? A 1 -2 gallon needs changed twice a week.A live plant isn't necessary. You don't have to have a filter or find a way to turn it way down. Yes, you need a good water conditioner. Prime is good and so is Aquasafe. A light isn't really necessary. Fish need a day/night cycle just like we do. I hope this answers some of your questions.

people are saying it is bad that Mr. big hangs out at the bottom of his tank...

he seems ok to me....but I just want to make sure.

Pellets should be fed as his staple food and you can feed freeze dried or frozen foods, such as daphnia, bloodworms and brine shrimp as once a week treats. If he's laying on the bottom for prolonged periods of time then something could be wrong with him.

That usually means they are cold. Is the water heated? If not mini heaters kept at low setting would work.

If he's laying at the bottom he could be cold.
What's the tank temperature at?
Bettas thrive best in about 76-80F, so he may need a heater.

I would get a Marineland stealth visitherm, 25 watt. I use one in my 2.5 gallon critter keeper. I also recommend Hikari Betta bio gold pellets.
