For heaters, I personally like the 25w elite mini by hagen. The only con about it is that there's no dial to show what temp you're turn it to, so you have to have a thermometer to help. Some people on this site also like the visi therm stealth heater.

Flakes are usually not the best choice of food for bettas. A really good brand of food is hikari bio-gold pellets. All of my bettas love them! Lots of other people on this site buy them too. Some people also use betta pellets by Wardley.

If the flakes are for Bettas it should be fine. Just don't feed tropical fish flakes as bettas need meat and tropical flakes are mostly vegetables.
