Cleaning the tank

OK I'm still new with fish so I have basic questions... I get why we have to change at least part of the water every week or so to make sure the ammonia level doesn't go up too high (how often do I need to do this with bio wheel?). How about cleaning the tank? The tanks I have look very clean but there are weird build-ups around the thermometer and the power chords/suction for the heater. It looks really gross but is this harmful to the fishy?

even with a biowheel, every week u need to change water 2 times for anything less than 5 gallons. im not sure what your build up is, but, i personally would be cleaning it every time i saw it.

I have a Eclipse Corner 5 with biowheel. I change the 30% of the water once a week. I find that you do need to clean the thermometer every so often. It does get build up of some sort. Also, if you have an Eclipse, you NEED to take the filter apart every so often and clean up inside it, clean the magnetic spinner, etc. It does wonders for your tank lol.

Thank you for your replies! I have Marineland Eclipse 3 at work and 6 at home. 3 gallon tank is getting nasty because the live plants are dying. It took me a while to realize that it's probably because I'm not here on weekends and the light is off. I haven't been able to clean it well but I do change 20-30% water and I will continue to do that. I'm also finding out that the syphon is too hard to use on 3 gallon (too small) so turkey baster might do the trick.

Thanks for reminding me about the filter and the magnetic spinner. I had a hard time opening it up last time and gave up. Any tricks to opening it up? to get the spinner I mean.
