I should be carreful when I say this, only some fish can burp, there are two classifications (that I know of) for how fish manage their swim bladder: physotomes and physoclists


physotomes, like bettas burp to maintain the gas levels, and gulp air of course.

physoclists, like bass have to fill their swimbladder up after their yolk sac is absorbed, they only have a fixed period to fill it before a special duct (that the physotomes always have throughout their life) closes, after that they manage the gases through their blood. If they cannot fill their airbladder quick enough they will not survive. These guys do not burp
