I have an API ammonia test kit from when I was cycling the 10 gal. I'll be sure to check frequently then.

I may buy him a filter later on if I can. After searching on youtube, I find that my tank is actually a 2.5 minibow! So it may be difficult to cycle, but worth giving a shot I think.
