My Betta is sick... please help!

I have a crown tail betta who I am smitten with; I picked him up a few weekends ago at a fish auction. Anyways, over the past few days he's been acting odd the past few days. Not swimming well or eating. Tonight he's hanging out at the bottom of his tank and breathing heavy. His color is good and he doesn't have any obvious fungus. Anyone have any ideas??

Breathing heavily is a sign to many ailments.
The most common are; ammonia poisoning, nitrate poisoning, nitrite poisoning, and lack of oxygen.

Is he in a tank? What size tank?
Or is he in a bowl? What size bowl?
does he have a heater?
Is he in a cold room?
Are there any other fish in his tank/bowl?
Does he have any bloating that you can see?
