Black Fungal Growth?

So I just noticed this tonight when taking pictures of Loch - what I had assumed were just darker scales look like they almost might be some sort of fungal growth or something. He's been in constant color flux since I got him so I'm ashamed to say I didn't really think anything was wrong - the zoom on my camera is a lot better than my normal vision, apparently. Anyone have any ideas what this might be? He's in a planted 2-gallon with weekly 50% water changes and I've had him for about 2 years.

Constant colour flux as in he has taken different colours over the years? There is a fun gene in Some bettas where some call the "jumping gene". The colour chromosomes in the fish are able to move around in the body causing it to change colour over the years XD this is fun to watch. Some change colours many times throughout their lives and some change slowly and gradually. Most people call this process marbling :)
Scroll down this link and you will find pictures of different fish throughout their lives who look completely different in terms of colour throughout their lives :D
Do have a look at this blogs picture dated back to Feb 9,2013 and before, those pictures shows most evidently how marbling happens:)

Yeah, his coloring has changed, parts of him have become black or darker blue, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if he has some marble in him.

That said, the black areas on his head and near the front of his dorsal almost seem to be fuzzy when I zoom in on these pictures, which is why I thought maybe it's something malignant.

Bump. Still a little worried if anyone has a more critical eye and can tell me what they think.
