Unhappy My Marcel died over the weekend - is this normal

I've had him as on office fish for about a year and a half. This seems awfully short. On Friday he wasn't interested in eating, in his rest he leaned toward one side and seemed to have trouble keeping upright. His breathing was labored. I know i know "he's just a fish - buy a new one." I just want to make sure he didn't die a torturous death.
I'm getting a new one tonight - I don't want to repeat the same mistake.

He might have been in some pain near the end, but I'm not sure.
At least he's in peace now.
I don't think he's "just a fish" and I bet the majority of the people here will agree with me.
We all love our fishy friends x3
I'm not really sure of the average life span for a betta though...
It depends on what size tank your fish was in and water parameters I think.

Yeah-- many people consider them 'just a fish', but you are right in assuming that they do have a central nervous system and therefore can feel pain and need to be treated with compassion.

You are also correct in the assumption that 1.5 years is a short life... it is not uncommon for bettas to reach 7 years of age when cared for properly. Why not review your betta care regime here :http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/b...are-faq-20058/ before purchasing your next betta?

Sorry for your loss, and welcome to the fish forum!

Poor Marcel.
He is definitely not just a fish,
on this forum, people say that just as someone would say its not just a dog.
Im sorry, RIP Marcel.
