Tank redecoration!!

ok last friday I finally decided that I will redecorate Jasper's tank, I'm tired of seeing him with ragged edged fins and scabs everywhere *lol* (but he's a little toughy, healthy as can be. But it's wearing me out to see him hurt like that).
I cut out a baffle for his filter last night, I just wanna know what I could do to smooth out all the edge's...any sugestions...
(he loves the low flow, now he can just swim lazely along without getting pushed by the current 8))
I took out his rock and during the week-end I'll take out his plants (so he can still hide in them for now) He has plastic plants .
I plan to put in those betta bulbs I saw on here or something, all lined up along the back of the tank, then some..

Well my main question was, do i need to put in a small cave in for him or will the thick wall of foliage give enough protection...

i dont have caves in any of my tanks, i have plants and my boys love them, swimming thru them around the, even resting on them.

Another stupid question, I have a 2.5 gallon tank..wich I fear might be a bit small..the tank came with a filter.
If the plants need the room can I just take the filter out or is it preferable to keep the filter in...

I'd keep the filter IMO.

Keep the filter in and buy a few silk plants.

thankx guys! the baffle I made broke and plus i noticed because of the light the baffle melts so now I have no baffle on. Jasper looks to be enjoying the flow of the filter, I mean he's been living like that for 2 months now.
but I'm thinking of putting a few plants in front of the filter (to like hide it) and hopefully it will break down the flow.
