How do you Cycle a tank?

Okay so I have a 4.75 gallon bowl, heater, and about to pick up some gravel and plant at the pet store. Looks like cycling a tank is the best option because I want my future betta to be healthy and happy. How do I start the whole cycling process. Also any tips on what plants to buy would be helpful.

Gravel I plan to get is sand or almost as small as sand but not quite. (I read that this way the blood worms can not hide in it)
