Problems with Syphon

I just attempted to syphon my 6 gallon tank. I was wise enough to figure out I needed to take my shrimp and bettas out, but I left in the snails. I think they survived.

However, I had a couple problems/questions when I did this syphoning thing. I actually was able to figure out how to get suction, at least. Anyway, I'd appreciate it if someone could give me some insight...

1. Am I supposed to remove all of my plants and rocks from my tank when I use the syphon?

2. I think I had a pretty strong suction going, but I removed SO much water, and there is still tons of debri left. I think I removed about 50% of my water, and probably only about 25% of the debri on the bottom of the tank. WHY?

3. Is there a way to do this that does not remove so much water?

4. Do some plants not have as much waste as others? I have plant pieces in my tank everywhere.

5. Is there just a much better way to do this?

I'm so frustrated.
