New project!

Hello! I'm a long time betta fan, though this is my first real attempt at making it a serious hobby. My first betta was a dark blue veil-tail named Peeve. I kept him through all four years of college even successfully moving cross country with him every year! He died in my senior year from what I think was a bacterial infection that I didn't have the ready funds to treat in time. After Peeve I was too sad to get another betta for a few years, but my boyfriend is into large cichlids so we've had always fish in the house, they just were more his fish than mine.

This fall I wanted a project of my own, so we set up a five gallon and brought home Tyrion Lannister, so named because he was tiny, red, spunky, and lived in a betta castle. Unfortunately, it's been a really tough winter already and we gas a massive ice storm followed by a week of negative temperatures (it's warmer today! It was 9F!) And all our fish dies in the power outages. We lost two Oscars (one adult named Oscar, and one adolescent named Bert), two plecos, three jewel cichlids and Tyrion Lannister.

I've been itching to try again, but boyfriend is too sad at losing his buddies Oscar and Bert to try again right now, so their large tank is becoming a planted community tank for a while (currently housing some gouramis and tetras and a catfish) and I'm giving it another go with a betta.

Boyfriend's sister took me betta shopping and we picked out a beautiful red and silver delta tail elephant eared boy today. No pictures yet, he's too freaked, but I'm already worried that EE was a mistake. He doesn't seem just right.

Anyway, pleased to meet you all! Hope I enjoy this community as much as I've enjoyed lurking!

Hello and welcome to the forum

Sorry that you lost Tyrion (love the name btw). Did you lose the fish because you lost power? There are ways to keep a tank warm(ish) during power outages.

As far as your new boy, give him time to settle down and some places to hide until he does.

Our power and water were out for six days and the temps were below zero. Easily thirty degrees indoors. :( We tried to find someplace to take them with a generator, but it was over the holidays and we couldn't work anything out in time. We tried keeping them warm by insulating the tanks and by siphoning, warming, and readding, but it wasn't enough. It was very sad. We are looking into generators or battery backups if we get back into large cichlids again. Next time I will take my betta to work in a cup!

I'm so sorry to hear about Tyrion (I love the name too), but I'm glad to hear you're not giving up keeping bettas. Let us know when you've named your new EE :)

My EE did not survive the first night at home. I think we have concluded he had a severe shock. The pet store told me he survived the ice storm that killed Tyrion, so in retrospect, I'm not surprised the shock of moving so soon afterwards ultimately was too much for him.

I did get another boy, a yellow VT (un)creatively named Pineapple and he's doing very well! he's the most striking color I've ever seen, a lemony yellow all over with deep red-orange spots on one side and black tracery around his facial/gill scales. When he gets excited and flares the very small red-orange edges on his fins spreads up the whole fin. He looks like he's blushing!

He has some fin damage (curling and tears) from life in the cup and he's afraid of me still, but I'm determined to heal him up and make friends with him.

Sadly he is scared of the camera right now too, and the hood light is dependent on the filter, and he HATES the filter so his pictures don't do him any justice at all. All my pictures show a terrified fish huddling.
