I can already tell its way too strong, he can barely swim against it...know any ways to weaken it?

Make sure the water level is as high as possible so the water is not just dumping in, some filters have a switch to lower the power level.

Here is another idea I found online:

"you can get a bag full of pillow stuffing that has zero additives and is 100% pure polyester and break off a big piece to put in where your media goes...you can even have some hanging out into the water surface to break the splash and current even more..."

Try getting the "filter floss" And put it in the filter where the water comes out, it should slow it down. Sorry the pic is so huge.

lol that's a unique idea...can't pull it off tonight though, guess it stays off... Here's a pic of the boys checking out their new home after the filter went off...lol
