Just ordered an API testing kit. Now what?

After having three of the four shrimp I bought die, I decided it was time for me to buy a testing kit.

So, I got the API freshwater testing kit on ebay that contains over 800 tests.

So, my question is, now what? Once it comes, and I test the water, what do I do? Is there a way to change the nitrates, ph balance?

I'm thinking about getting some other tank mates for them...

The only way nitrates can be changed is if you change the water.

Remember:

AMMONIA >nitrosomonas bacteria> NITRITE >nitrobacter bacteria> NITRATE => Water Change

So in a healthy aquarium there should be 0 ammonia, 0 nitrate and minimal nitrates.

pH can also be changed, but I wouldn't recommend you do so because monkeying around with pH is often more trouble than it is worth.

If you have a Master Test Kit I would test pretty much all parameters on a regular basis... espescially if you have reason to believe that the bacteria may not be handling all the waste if, for instance you add more fish or have a major power outage. Ammonia and NitrIte should be 0 unless something is wrong, nitrates should be low, pH and hardness should be consistent unless something is wrong.
