Can Anyone Explain This?

My husbands 10 year old cousin has a red VT and keeps him in a tiny ½ gallon tank with a filter. The tank it’s absolutely filthy and you can see a layer of poop and food on tops of the rocks and most of the tank is covered in algae. BUT, the fish is happy as can be, flaring, looks to be in great health, and has lived like this for 3 years!!! I asked my husbands aunt about the fish and she said they almost never change the water. But my little guy with is a double tail got fin rot with in the first 2 weeks and he has almost 5 gallons and I keep his tank clean. Are VTs harder bettas?

I don't think so, it just depends on the betta I think

I have no idea why some bettas can live in filthy conditions and never get sick and others live in pristine conditions, with a heater, filter and large, cycled tank and get all kinds of diseases.

My veiltales do seem to be more hardy than my fancy bettas.

Personally, I've noticed that my veiltails are a bit hardier, than my delta, or halfmoons.

I think DBT might have a weaker immune system because im pretty sure the double tailing is really just a genetic deformity... doesnt look right to me. My DBT got fin rot right after i got him and i could not fix him! he died about 5 months later with nearly 50% of his fins missing... no idea why or how he died, kept his water clean and everything... w/e..

Its sad about that Red VT! You should get him a larger vase or tank, and maybe tell him to clean it more often! At least once a week! tahts not much to ask!

I've wondered how some Bettas can live in horrible conditions just fine and other living in better conditions have issues.
The VTs I had seemed to do a bit better then the rest. Also I noticed my females did better as well.

I've never really had a problem with my VTs. Granted that is all I've ever had other than Cheshire (CT), Amarilla (not at VT, but not sure) and Axel (ST)

Some fish are just hardier then others. :) Just like some people are tougher then others..

I guess it's just a matter of adapting to the surroundings and conditions. One of life's little mysteries there....
