Betta hates the filter

I've dealt with this gunk on one of my crowntails fins for 3 months now. Finally, about 2 weeks ago, I discovered the cause. Evidently, leaving the filter on overnight causes it. Completely serious. I've been playing around, sometimes having it on overnight, sometimes having it off... and I only see it if the filter was on.

This particular fish really hates the filter. Whenever it's on, he hides under an ornament in his tank and doesn't move, he rarely even comes up for air. The filter is baffled and hardly moves the water's surface; and it's the same filter I use for my two other tanks without any issues.

I guess this stuff can only attack him if he's sitting still. But my tanks are all very clean, so I'm still questioning what exactly this stuff is.



But what can I do? If I turn the filter off at night, the heater doesn't work well; the bottom of the tank will be 75 degrees in the morning, and the top will be 80. That can't be good for him.

How else can I circulate the heat around the tank?

Maybe the current is too strong for your betta.

Nope, it hardly makes his fins move, even when he's right under the filter. He's just... scared of it. He's a skittish fish overall, scared of everything really.

And I've got a halfmoon in another tank with the same filter. He's got no problems. Being that his fins are much larger.... you'd really think he'd be having a problem with the filter, not my crowntail.

Maybe its the humming sounds that bothers him.

Either way... I need to find another way to circulate the heat through the tank. He doesn't seem to mind when I turn the filter on and off throughout the day. But it's mostly at night that I have a problem with the heat being uneven throughout the tank.


Could I put the filter on a timer maybe? @-@;

I'm afraid that would overheat the tank.

I'm going to try moving this one further down in the tank when I clean it tomorrow. Hopefully it'll work out.


I've seen timers, but they all say they are for lights. Really... what's the difference? <.<;

How about a bubble stone or wand, they help circulate the tank.

I can try it. I know even that used to freak him out when I first got him though. @-@;


Maybe it won't bother him so much in this larger tank...
