Question How long would it take....

to cycle a 5gal tank without a filter?

Cycling seems like such a good idea - much easier than 100 percent changes every week. But I have read that without any filtration or movement in the tank, cycling can take a while?

I have read loads of great articles, and I think I have enough info to cycle my tank. But just to be sure that I have it right:
I would want to do a fishless cycle, and probably using fish food, not ammonia. So I drop a pinch of food in every day until both ammonia and nitrate levels both read 0. Then I do an 80 percent water change, and add fish/frogs gradually?

Do I have it straight? If not, please correct me.

Also, just wanted to say thanks to everyone! After I rescued my betta, you have been a wonderful, supportive, and very helpful bunch! I am so grateful.

You can't cycle a tank without a filter. Filters aren't expensive at all.

You've got all your info right about the cycling though. Good luck! Cycled tanks are defiantly easier!!!

Good call on the cycling... yo uare definitely making your life a whole lot easier by sorting it out before throwing the fish in.

I would definitely suggest a filter. The media has lots of surface area, oxygen and food form the running water and a good percentage of the bacteria reside there. Even a small sponge filter (Lustar Hydrosponges are awesome) be sifficient for your purposes. They may seem expensive to set up at first, but look at it this way: you should never ever have to change the media/buy a new sponge unless the old sponge is practically falling apart. Compared to spending $10 on filter cartridges each month, it will pay for itsself pretty fast!
