Urgent heater and filter help!

I'll cut right to the chase. Today we bought a fancy new tank and a heater, filter, all that... So, anyways, I'm a bit worried about the heater and filter. The filter is leaking right near the wire, and the heater has a bit of mesh/paper stuff near the coil. My brother is a total electric nerd, and he says that the coil will superheat and set the paper on fire...
I'm not too sure, and my mum just says that it'll be fine.
Screw the fish, I don't want to start a fire or get my mum electrocuted!
Do you think it will be fine?
I need help REALLY quick before she turns the heater on!

All heaters have that. I don't think it will be a problem... I have never heard of a heater igniting.

But if the filter is leaking i would take it back ot the store and see what they can do about replacing it.
