Unhappy Well it's official!!

One of my brand new bettas that I just got yesterday is dead!! I just had to flush him :( I don't understand what could have happened. I guess the water was too cold. Although now I have a heater I guess it was too late for the little guy. He had been in the same place all morning and when I tried to see if he would move with the net, he didn't. Looks like I will be stopping by Petco on my way home.

Thank you! I just don't know what went wrong. Could it have been the temp of the water? Or could he have been sick already? Even though I just got him, I did cry a little. Feel bad for the little guy. I am going to Petco when I get off this evening. Can you have a male and female in the same tank? What I have now is a split tank. 2.5 gallons. I was thinking about getting a male and female and have them together. Or would my other male that would be by himself get jealous?

No, you can't house males and females together except for breeding purposes only. You CAN have them in a divided tank as long as the divider is secure.

So sorry to hear about your buddy :(

As for splitting the tank - are you splitting a 2.5 gal tank or a 5 gal tank split into 2.5 gals each side? IMO, 2.5 gallons is too small to split.

Good luck.

Also wanted to add almost every store that sells bettas (petco, petsmart, Meijer, Walmart) will refund your money if your fish dies within the first 14/15 days. But you have to bring the dead fish in with your receipt.

That's so sad. He could have been sick in the store or he was just weak and was stressed when he got put in a tank. Poor Little guy. You can bring the dead body back to PetCo within 14 days and get another one for exchange. Bettas can get stressed really easily too.

Well to update everyone, I am back from Petco with my new Halfmoon Betta. Not sure what I am going to call him yet. Will try to post pics soon. Let's hope this one does better than the last The lady at Petco said he probably killed himself by hitting the divider in the tank trying to get to the other fish. Has anyone ever heard of a betta doing this?
