How do I clean out a tank with sand instead of gravel?

Now that everyone is playing nicely in my aquarium, I am thinking about switching my gravel to sand. The only thing is, I just got the hang of syphoning... How do I syphon the tank if there is sand in it?

The trick is to not get too close to the sand.. you can't get down on it the way you would with gravel. Sand is pretty hard from what I've heard. Some people swear by it and others hate it.
