Unhappy My Betta died :(

I got my first Betta fish for Christmas. I put it by my bed with a light shining into the tank. I'm not sure how he died. He did have ICH i'm pretty sure. could he have died from that? and in his last couple days he kept running into the wall fighting itself. I want to get another one but i don't want to kill it too. How do you think it died? Oh and my fish was so weird, it literally lay on the bottom on the tank in the rocks or like bury itself and make like a nest. I don't know if this was normal or not, i feel like he was retarded. haha

Hello and welcome to the forum.I'm sorry about your betta! Your fish could have had something wrong with it before you bought it, maybe something internal. What size tank do you have? Do you have a heater?

I'm not sure what size my tank is. I bought it though and it's specifically used for bettas. And no i didn't have a heater but the lady at the pet store said that it did not need one, but i did shine a light on it.

Sorry Kirsten. If you decide to get another one, you might want to read up on the Betta care threads so you can be ready to give the next one some proper care.

As for bettas not needing a heater, that's true if your room temp is always 76 degrees or above. Here in the northeast, my bettas would not have a chance without heaters. Water quality needs to be monitored and changed either weekly or more depending on the size bowl or tank you have them in.

I'm sorry you lost your betta

Are you saying you're pretty sure he DID have ick, or that he did not have ick? If you think he had it, yes, that will kill a fish if it's not treated.

Also, bettas really do need a heater and a filter. Plus the tank needs to be cycled so that there's enough beneficial bacteria to keep the water safe for the fish. We keep our bettas in 2 divided 10g tanks and the temperature stays around 80. They like a pretty warm tank -- quite a bit warmer than room temperature is recommended.

Again, really sorry about your fish. I hope you will have better luck in the future. They're such neat fish!
