Would I have better luck with an NPT?

I've taken two attempts at plants now, but both times, within 3 months or so the plants died.

I have decent lighting, Seachem Flourish weekly, and Flourish Excel daily... Sadly, my substrate is just plain gravel.

Would I have a high chance of success with an NPT? I've already put a ton of money into this tank and if I'm just going kill new plants than I might just get some silk ones.

well you could go npt, or get one fo the substrates like eco-complete, flora-max- seachem makes one and yeah there are several, I am leaning away from dirt in my newer tanks especially ones with plants that have heavy roots , it makes a mess when you decide to move stuff around

Just a thought, have you had your water tested at a LFS? A place that does mechanical testing, not just strips to test the levels of the stuff in the water? You could also try googling your local water company, they have to publish the results of the tests they do with the levels of all the stuff in the water. Maybe your water is to soft and it isn't supporting the plants, giving them what they need.

Could you provide more specifics in what light you are using? I found a new substrate I am dying to try in one of my tanks called ActivFlora. It looks like very fine gravel and comes in very pretty colors, gives all the additives plants need to grow without the dirt.
