Hi and welcome to the forum, yes your boy is a boy. He is a lovely looking boy.

I have attached a link to the basic care sheet for betta's to help you get started.

Oh great! May i ask how you can tell the gender? And is he a crown tail? I had a red betta a couple months ago but he sadly passed away and today i seen snowflake and just had to get him! Ive never seen a white one before i bought him down at my local petshop, also i had another question is there anyway to tell how old he is? He is quite small and has big eyes,
Ive been reading and i think his home might be too small, it is one of the square type tanks they keep near where the fish are in little glass boxes, i was once told if their tank was too big they could die of exhaustion, which after reading the forum and looking at other peoples set ups i now think a big tank is a great idea! Also i think i need to buy him a heater as its starting to get colder here. Thanks again for the welcome :)

The females never have the long flowing fins that the males have and yes your boy is a crown tail. The females have rounder belly's due to their eggs, please see the attached crown tail female image and if you look closely you will also see a white egg which are often visible on females.

Oh wow okay ive never noticed the eggs before, so guessing pet shops mainly sell males due to their appearance then, the girls are still quite pretty and delicate

Tank size the cups they sell them in are not suitable for a full time home no matter what they tell you at the store.

I would recommend a 20 litre tank with a filter and heater, anything smaller and if is pretty much impossible to keep good water conditions, and a lot of fish issues are caused by poor water conditions.

Going by what you have said your tank sounds really small and you will need to do water changes probably daily in order to stop him getting Ammonia poisoning. If you read the info and the cycling link in the thread I attached, that will help you understand that side of things better.
