Just bought 20gallon tank want sum advice

I just bought 20 gallon tank of craiglist today and want kind of general and specific advice on it. I did own fish about 4 years ago (a male betta and gold fish earlier) but I kinda forgot what I need in accesseries.

1) Im planinng to do a female betta seroity(i think thats how you spell it) how much females should I buy and i do plan to buy other fish, ghost shrimps, and maybe snails (I want something that helps clean the eco system like algee). I can get some guppies( for free) I heard corries and ottos' catfish are good to keep with bettas. A fish that i really do want is the black knife ghost fish but i do not know how

2) Im think and most likely going to buy real plants at least a couple of them but i need like basic instruction on how to care for them (oh and which ones are the lower maintaince ones.

lastly I would like any type of advice questions to help me out

I'm pretty sure your Betta will kill the guppies, or vice-versa. Check out the companion board for a good idea of companions for them.

Make sure you cycle your tank, as a 20 gall would probably need cycled (:

ok i forgot to list somethings that i got with the aquaruim like a filter,heater, sum gravel, a florucent hood light. oh and like a little hollow log for fish to hide in

Well I'm not sure if ghost knifes an bettas can mix and i'd love to kno but I do kno that ghost knifes require brackish water and ilve heard that bettas can't live permanantly in brackish water

ya i found out that black knives need large aquaruims because they grow large i guess and they might eat the betta

Yeah, black knives get large and need a large (50+ gallons I think) aquarium.

For a sorority you will need more than five female bettas. This is so that they don't pick on each other constantly, and so one emerges as the dominate betta. You will need to watch you sorority closely to make sure there isn't too much aggression, or one that is ill. Ghost shrimp are good to keep with bettas. You can keep a few ghost shrimp with the female bettas in a tank of that size. You tank looked higher than longer. Is that right? You might not be able to fit as many ghost shrimp in you tank because it is tall. I have never taken care of any shrimp, so I wouldn't be able to tell you how many you can have.

Java fern and java moss are easy to take care of. I bought some java fern the other day (before both my bettas died :() It is pretty easy to take care of.
