*facepalm* Fish store workers...

Ok well, this actually happened Friday, but I'm a slow reporter? Actually, I was too excited about my new Betta's XD

Anyway, Friday we went to a local fish store. It is a MOSTLY salt water fish store, but they had 2 fresh water tanks and 3 male Betta's each in a ~1 gallon tank. The store was renovating so everything was kind of haywire, so my friend and I was looking at the salt water tanks (omg they had a $3,000 puffer fish. It was HUGE o_O) when the store owner (I think) noticed us. He came over, can I help you, blah de blah. He shows us around and then asks a guy where the Betta's are, then takes us to them (we already knew where they were...)

He was talking about the Betta's but not really saying anything about tank sizes, just that they couldn't be kept together, etc. Then he was like "I love doing this!!" and picked up two of the tanks and put the males close together to cause them to start puffing. I will admit, the males were beautiful and I wanted one but... face palm moment, yes.

Then he talks about how the Betta's are from a large company because he tried to breed them once, but it never worked out. He said the male always ended up killing his females. I was like "Dx" but didn't say anything. He said once he succeeded but the babies wouldn't eat. I was like "yeah they hatch in 24 hours." and he goes "more like 3 weeks."

What?!

He didn't notice his babies had hatched until THREE WEEKS later? No wonder they all died!

Ugh facepalm facepalm facepalm.

So he may be an idiot, but at least he had pretty Betta's and they weren't in tiny bowls -_-

Well, I can't blame him for liking watching the boys flare :P It is very nice to see them when they're at their most active and beautiful. I admit that I move my boys around sometimes, after they've gotten used to their neighbors, just to see them begin to flare again xD
The REAL facepalm moment is his obvious lack of research when it comes to breeding. A little research goes a LONG way, something he should learn.
I commend him for having the bettas in one gallons, though, which far too many fish stores do NOT do.

Yeah, I like to see 'em flare too, but... come on! XD Surely if he does it all day long it will stress 'em out.

Actually, I think the boys like it when they have someone to flare at. It gives them something to do. If I move one of the boys to another room, where there isn't anything or anyone readily near, they get pretty depressed. It's interesting to see (:

3 weeks!! This guy knows NOTHING about bettas! Yeah, thats probably why the fry died. If you don't feed them they will starve!! Apparantly he didn't do research before breeding.

Interesting, I didnt know it was 24 hours either and I looked it up to see what it took...of course I got into reading how much work it was and thought to myself, I'm way to busy to try and breed with these directions.

A reason why I get upset about going to a specialty store of any kind is the proprietor's unwillingness to believe there are customers that might have a share of information more than them.

I have entered reptile stores with ecologist, zoologist, and herpetology specialist friends that have been indirectly insulted by the proprietor saying that those who choose majors in their related sciences are ignorant, or entirely misinformed of their studies in relation to reptiles in general. Whether it is from proper care of said reptiles, to identifying behaviors and more.

Unfortunately, in order to make money as an entrepreneur, knowledge of product sold is not a requirement. Simply keeping stock, and knowing how to keep buyer's interest between show and sale is all that is necessary.

Take one enthusiast who has enough knowledge of any craft to keep it sustainable, give them the knowledge in how to capitalize on it, and provide them enough suckers that have interest to pay for product, and you have a very successful business.

Such is the way of life, and all things related to capitalism.

How is that for being stuck in a fishbowl, and looking out, unable to control what is fed to you?

I'm a Zoology major, Tin ^^ I didn't say anything to the man, though. I just went 'ahh..' and we decided to leave.

Now I will say, admit rather, some things we are "taught" is wrong. Some things in our field are wrong, but many of us love animals enough to study up and find out the reality of the situation.
