A lot of bettas bite their tails, it all comes down to: why. Some say it's boredum, hunger, stress, etc.
How big is your tank? Is it filtered and heated? How often do you clean it? Have you tested the water? Do you have a lot of hiding places for him such as plants or decoration?
A lot of these different factors could be a part in why he bit his tail.

Sounds like stress to me. What do you have him in?

hopefully that's it. sounds like he's relaxing a bit and getting used to his surroundings.

good luck.

One of my males does it when he sees another betta close by...like another tank near his. I have to keep him in my bedroom (which is not bad at all or anything) but if he sees male or female he will get all mad and start ripping his tail apart. I usually put a female tank close ot my males so they have company :) he's the only one who doesn't like it lol ;)

Do you have any other betta tanks he can see close by?
