Lighting

I have my mighty Falkor in a 2.5 fish bowl and just have a desk lamp with a fluorescent bulb right now.
My question is in two parts-
Does he need dark time? Does he need light time? He seems to prefer the corner of the tank with the light, but I don't want to over expose him.
And is there a better bulb or lighting system that'd be better for him?

Also I plan to get more plants so there are more shaded areas and bidding spots.

I am curious about this as well, I did read that fish need a time in dark so they can "sleep" But wasnt sure, it seemed to make him happy when I had the light on all day and turned it off at night for sleep time.

I keep my light on for 8 hours a day, and off for the rest of the time. They do get some natural light through out the day as well. Fish need a night and day like us. Most of my lights are 'proper' fish tank lights, but a couple have just desk lamps. The desk lamps get more algae, but all in all the fish do alright with both lights.
