Brunei & his new girlie friend

I decided to try the whole breeding thing again today, I've only ever tried with my royal blue VT male & his usual gf (twice), but they never get any further than their babies hatching & then they disappear.....

....so today I decided to try Brunei, my lovely yellow/orange VT male & a female from my selection (un-named), so i'll call her 'the misses!'

the guy at the aquarium nicely for free gave me some lovely moss like plant that floats at the surface (which i raised the hint that it'd be great for breeding my bettas & for their bubblenest), so he broke abit off the plant in a display tank & gave me it!

The bubble wrap thing was good, especially to build a nest under, but i think what happened last time was, once the fry hatch, they couldn't get any air under there to breath, therefore died....maybe?

The fry's labyrinth does develop for a month or so after they hatch, so I don't think that would be the cause.

I think you're better off with the plant for the male too build his nest under. He'll prbably appreciate a nice plant more than bubblewrap. lol

They're so pretty!!!

So this evening, Brunei made a little nest during the day (kept him busy), the missus went very dark colours with patches of colour on her side, he White thing at her vent visible.
This evening my partner comes running in the bedroo
saying the missus is dropping White eggs & eating them. So I decided as he'd built a little nest, I'd put them together. 5hrs they spent together & basically he beat her (well nipped her fins), nothing happened & she spent most of the time forced to the floor panting & coming up quick for air. So as it's bedtime & not wanting to risk them a night together alone incase of more damage, I put her back in her box, with him so she can recover overnight, but she's still visible to him but sperate.
Do u think there not compatible or shall I give it another couple days & try again
