Water conditions

OK, I went out a bought a test kit- [although the one I bought didn't have a slot for ammonia, which is one reason why I was going to get it- urrgh]
All of my water parameters are in good shape- except is it a bad thing to have hard water? The water here in eastern KY is really hard... There's not much I can do about it that I know of, but I don't know if it's good or bad.
[since the test kit didn't say whether it was good or bad]

Sorry to ask so many questions, just trying to get my betta in the best living conditions possible :)

By the way, did you know that our water in Louisville has ammonia in it?

>.< No.... Should I go ahead and put Ammo-Lock in his water just in case? I don't want to medicate him too much, but since I don't know, will it hurt anything to put some in?
Also, when I go home I plan on taking back well-water with me [we live out in the country sort of and our hose gets well water..] would that be better than tap water? Or would it make much of a difference, do you think?

Go ahead and use the Ammo Lock. I think well water is ok but someone else can tell you for sure.

Thanks, I had no idea that ammonia was in Louisville water [even though I haven't used that since Christmas break]. It could be in Richmond water as well...

I use Tetra's AquaSafe, which I know doesn't eliminate ammonia [but I don't want to go out and buy Prime because I have a large bottle of AquaSafe that I don't want to waste. At least I have AmmoLock!!]

I have a half a bottle of Aquasafe that I need to use up. I've been using my Prime.

Sounds like you're using those dip strips for a test kit - right? From what I understand, those are pretty inaccurate.

Get yourself an API Freshwater master test kit. Walmart sells them a lot cheaper than Petco, Petsmart.

My Wal-Mart didn't have that. I got the Jungle brand "quick dip" thing. I'll be back home next weekend [and week] for Spring Break and I plan on getting a few more things to make sure my water is OK. I'll see if my Wal-Mart at home has what you're talking about. [even though I spent $12 on the dip things >.<]

/sigh/ College kids shouldn't have bettas. lol
