Tank Size & Heater Wattage

Ok so I have a 5 gallon glass tank now. I need a heater (b/c I returned the second heater I bought a couple days ago b/c I didn't like it since our house gets really cold at night and the water temp. was fluctuating too much and I couldn't tell if it was on or not) but I'm not sure which wattage of heater would be best for a 5 gallon tank. Some products say 25 watts is ideal for 2-5or8 gallons while others say 50 watts for 5-10gallons. I have no idea which would be better. I need a heater that I can set the temp on and know it's actually on or off. Thanks for all your input!

I use a 50 in my 5 gallon with great results. I wouldn't go with anything that you can't adjust the temp. on by dialing it to where you want it.

I have a 3 gallon acrylic tank. It sits on a 1/4" thick bamboo hotmat on a granite countertop. Our home also runs cool. Tried a 25 watt first, it just couldn't cut it. For my situation, it took a 50 watt (adjustable) heater to maintain the temp around 80.

Yep. I'd go for a 50 watt. Just make sure it's adjustable. And that way, if you ever upgrade to a 10g, you can just use the heater you already have! :D
