Reflections

OK so I got an AWSOME new tank last night!! It's a 2.5 gallon with a true aquarium light and a filter. My only problem is that if all of the lights are off, exept for the tank light, his reflection shows in the glass. He flares out his gills, but if thats the only light on, he'll keep doing it all the time. If I keep his light on & the room light on, whats the point of having a tank light? Does He just need time getting used to his tank?

They will flare at their reflections. He will eventually calm down. Flaring is actually good for them because it helps spread their fins out. If he doesn't stop doing it constantly for a week or so and you see him doing it in certain spots, I'd get a couple plants to put up against the spots so he stops.

You could also put a towel over his tank to calm him down if he won't stop.

I dont think i can. He already has a tank cover. Or do you mean over the sides?

If you have HIS tank light on, and YOUR lights off, it acts as a mirror so it's helpless - he will see his reflection. Happens with me if I leave my bettas lights on, but the living room lights off.

You need to turn off his lights at night anyway. Lights are mainly for viewing purposes, not absolutely necessary.

My light is on a timer on at 12:30pm off at 12:30 am. Its the only lighting schedule that fits my schedule. I'm up at 6:30 am and go to sleep anytime from 11pm-12:30am (usually a nap in the middle of 3 days of the week.) This is what College and a Part time job does to you.

So my little 7watt bulb is on 12 hours a day. I could change that to 8 or less.

Another question would it confuse the Betta if the light went on and off twice a day? I want to see him in the morning and when I go to bed. Example 6:45am-11:30am, and then again from 6:30pm-12:30am. But then he would be getting the natural light from my window also, not direct sunlight, and the light from the bulb for way more than 12hrs a day.... is is possible to give a Betta too much light?

Yes, its possible.
Too much light will drive them MAD!

For me, I do 8-10 hours a day. Is 12 hrs pushing it? Idk, never done that much... and honestly, i don't know the consequences of having lights on all the time. But obviously I don't wanna try it either , lol.

As for the twice a day, i have no idea :\ I see no harm, they'll see it as nap time, etc. Sometimes mine take a nap when I'm in a different room doing homework for an hour at a time.
