Those bubbles are called a bubble nest. The bubble nest is made when the betta goes for air @ the surface and uses his labrynith organ to make it. (Simple: They blow bubbles.) They use it to nurse the eggs his female lays or more-so,they do it when they're happy but dont worry if you get a fish and he doesnt. It all depends on their personality. This is also a male only thing.
Enjoy your happy fish!

And don't destroy it either, lol! Sometimes they won't make it at all. Mine never make them anymore, it's really sad, haha. Sometimes they make it when they're happy, mating, or by pure instinct (<-- no one can explain it though!) Have fun with the bubble nest :) They're always impressive!

Sometimes those bubbles are a sign of water quality also. I know that in the past I've had a really bad film on the top of the water with those bubbles... and it wasn't from my betta.

I about 80% sure that film is from a huge lack of topwater agitation? Which does affect water quality, but never noticed bubbles.

Could you take a picture of it? Bloo97, females make bubblenests too. I never knew it until one of my females started making one and I started seeing people on here talking about it. :)

Some filters can create bubbles that look almost exactly like those your betta makes.

If it is from a filter you should be able to watch them being made.

I've had them fill my betta's styrofoam cup and attach around floating plants before & fooled me for a short time too,

Not trying to hijack this post, but I was just wondering how soon do they usually start making these bubble nests?
Pie ( my 2 1/2 yr old daughter named him ) started working on his today and we've only had him in his 1/2 gal tank for not even 2 whole days. Does this mean he's just a happy go lucky betta?
