Sand or Pebbles??

I have this plan to create a southeast asian swamp aquarium in my 55g tank. I now have to decide to use sand or estes deep river pebbles. Sand would give it a more natural recreation. But which of the two would look best? Is sand harder to clean and maintain? I use the python to clean my tanks. And I wont be using live plants btw.
