It sounds to me like he had cloudy eye. Sometimes adding stress to a betta when it already has an issue can be fatal. I think I heard somewhere that extreme cloudy eye can be fatal.

BTW I suggest getting at least a 3 gallon tank for your remaining betta and the snails. Snails go to the bathroom a lot and a betta needs to be in a 2.5 gallon tank (bettas can get up to a few inches long), so I would recommend a 5 gallon tank actually.
